About Our
Porcelain Veneers

Transform your smile with custom porcelain veneers designed to improve color, shape, symmetry, and overall appearance while maintaining a natural look. If you are looking for a cosmetic dentist for veneers, your treatment can be planned as part of personalized cosmetic dentistry, smile design, or a full smile makeover.

Traditional porcelain veneers may offer greater flexibility for more noticeable changes in tooth color, shape, size, and symmetry, especially when a more customized smile transformation is desired.

Porcelain dental veneers used to enhance the appearance of front teeth

We use digital smile design, cosmetic mockups, shade planning, 3D imaging, and CEREC/digital workflow tools to plan veneer shape, color, bite, and symmetry before treatment begins.

During your veneer consultation, we can also compare composite veneers, professional teeth whitening, gum contouring, clear aligners, and full smile makeover options so your veneer plan fits your goals, timeline, and budget.

Patients visit our offices from La Jolla, Chula Vista, UTC, Del Mar, Pacific Beach, Bird Rock, Clairemont, Bonita, Eastlake, and South Bay.

Common Veneer Cases We Plan For

Porcelain veneers can be planned for specific cosmetic concerns when whitening, bonding, or minor reshaping alone may not create the desired result. At your La Jolla or Chula Vista consultation, we review which concerns can be improved with veneers and when another cosmetic option may be a better fit.

  • Deep stains that do not respond well to whitening
  • Worn or shortened front teeth
  • Small chips, uneven edges, or asymmetry
  • Small gaps between front teeth
  • Old bonding that needs a longer-lasting option
  • Mild cosmetic crowding when orthodontics is not the main goal

Porcelain Veneers vs Composite Veneers

Both options can improve the appearance of your smile, but they differ in material, longevity, stain resistance, and treatment process. If you are still deciding, compare this page with our composite veneers guide and broader cosmetic dentistry options.

Feature Porcelain Veneers Composite Veneers
Material Custom ceramic porcelain Tooth-colored resin
Best For Dramatic smile makeovers Minor chips, shape, or color fixes
Stain Resistance Excellent Moderate
Longevity Longer lasting with proper care May need repair sooner
Treatment Time Usually two visits Often one visit

What to Expect During
Veneer Treatment

Your plan is customized around your teeth, bite, preferred shade, timeline, and how much tooth preparation is appropriate.

  • Consultation: review your goals, teeth, gums, bite, photos, and scans.
  • Smile Design: preview shape, length, color, and symmetry before treatment begins.
  • Preparation: shape the teeth conservatively and place temporaries when needed.
  • Final Placement: try in, bond, polish, and schedule a follow-up bite check. A night guard may be recommended if you grind or clench.

Will My Teeth Look Like
Stumps After Veneer Prep?

A lot of patients worry that veneer preparation means the tooth will be shaved down into a small stump. That is not how conservative veneer treatment is planned. For porcelain veneers, only a thin amount of enamel is usually shaped from the front and edge of the tooth so the veneer can sit naturally without looking bulky.

Crowns require much more tooth reduction because they cover the whole tooth. Veneers are different: they are bonded mainly to the front surface of the tooth.

Option Typical Reduction Main Difference
Minimal-prep veneer / Lumineer About 0.1 - 0.3 mm Very conservative shaping on the front surface of the tooth in selected cases.
Traditional veneer About 0.5 - 0.7 mm Thin shaping on the front surface of the tooth so porcelain can fit naturally.
Crown Usually more than 0.8 mm More tooth reduction all around the tooth because a crown covers the tooth; amount depends on material and tooth condition.

Every case is different. Some teeth need very little preparation, while others need more shaping depending on tooth position, crowding, old bonding, bite, material choice, and the final smile design.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Porcelain veneers may be a good option if your teeth and gums are healthy and you want to improve tooth color, shape, size, spacing, or symmetry. If you have active decay, gum disease, heavy grinding, or bite concerns, those issues may need to be treated first.
Porcelain veneers typically last 10–15 years with proper care. Premature failure can result from grinding (bruxism) without a night guard, biting hard objects, trauma, gum recession exposing the veneer margins, or decay beneath the veneer if oral hygiene lapses.
Yes. Properly sized and positioned veneers can close diastemas (gaps) between front teeth. The veneers are designed slightly wider than the natural teeth to fill the space without appearing disproportionate.
Porcelain veneers have a smooth, glazed surface that is highly resistant to staining from coffee, tea, and wine — more so than natural tooth enamel. However, the bonding cement at the margins can stain over time if oral hygiene is not maintained.
The cost of porcelain veneers depends on the number of veneers, case complexity, materials, shade planning, temporary veneers when needed, and whether additional cosmetic or gum treatment is recommended. A personalized estimate is provided after your consultation and smile design evaluation, and financing options are available for qualified patients.
No. Veneer preparation is much more conservative than crown preparation. In many veneer cases, only a thin layer of enamel is shaped from the front surface so the porcelain can fit naturally. Dr. Seraj plans the amount of reduction based on your tooth position, bite, and smile goals.
Because enamel is permanently altered during preparation, teeth cannot return to their original state without replacing the veneers. This commitment is why thorough consultation and planning with Dr. Seraj is essential before proceeding with veneer treatment.
